a lost spirit finds himself in a world he doesn't recognize with a body he doesn't recognize. he doesn't know what to do with his life, but builds a little home by the ocean.
and people come to visit the old beach and find that someone has built a home there overnight. and so they talk to him and tell him of the legends of the beach; they speak of an old library, and that if you sent a message in a bottle containing your wish, it'd come true when the seawater touched the paper... and they speak of the old religion of the area, one revolving around the moon. when the lost spirit says he doesn't have a name, they name him 'melo,' after a hero from their old fairytales.
it fascinates the lost spirit. he starts to rebuild the old civilization as best as he can; he never lived there, but he can bring back a shell of it, right? so he builds houses and bridges and starts to build a library. he finds as many books as he can and lines shelves with them. he names the new town poet town.
and people come back to the old beach, and they decide to stay in poet town. a few followers of the old religion find the town and stay there. they share their beliefs, and it spreads. it spreads to the lost spirit. the lost spirit is enraptured. with nothing else to follow, he chooses to follow the moon.

and when he dies, he is reborn, once again in a world he doesn't recognize with a body he doesn't recognize. having nothing to follow, he chooses to follow the moon once again. it's all he remembers; not his name, who he is, or what he is, but the moon. he writes in his spare time, and people find his torn up papers and the poems stuck on trees. they call him "the poet," and he thinks that's a fine enough name.
people begin to flock to him, and through no desire of his own he becomes the talk of the town! it's not quite a town, more like a small refuge of homeless folks... and so he builds for them. an innate knowledge compels him to build. he builds a home for himself along a riverbank, with a beautiful view of the forests.

when he dies once again (horribly, may i add), he is once again reborn and doesn't recognize himself. his thoughts are fighting each other and he can't tell which side of the argument he wants to follow, but he knows he can follow the moon. he knows he likes animals, and he knows he likes flowers, especially cherry flowers. so he names himself cherry and he finds a place to live, and mingles with the villagers.
over time his thoughts begin to settle, and he remembers a few things: he remembers that he had a purpose of some sort, and that he liked to write, and that he liked to build! oh, he loved to build, and so he built a library for the villagers to read in. he rebuilt their homes and workplaces as they needed, and eventually he began to rebuild their church as well. their beliefs followed the moon, and he became enthralled.
the nature of this lost spirit is to become powerful, and powerful would cherry become! the villagers loved him and his works, his writing and his architecture and his sense of decoration and his charming words.

in another time, someone else is born in a world he doesn't recognize and with a body he doesn't recognize. he doesn't remember a thing. he feels weak and empty and the world around him isn't real. he doesn't want to be seen by whatever else exists in this realm, if anything does, so he digs out a hole for himself and calls it home.
he knows this world isn't real but he is. it's a simulated reality and nothing in it matters, except for the few other otherworlders he encounters. something is missing from him and he can't tell what.
with no name and no knowledge of where he is, what does he do? he studies the "world" around him; it's obviously a simulated world of sorts, and he can manipulate it to his whim. he has no desire to live where people can see him or easily contact him, as he doubts there are "people" in this world. he finds himself compelled to the water, and to cherry trees. he can't quite explain himself.
